Dr. Jason Epps serves as THE RISING's founding/lead pastor. He lives with his wife, Roanne, and three kids, Micah (2008), Mandy (2010), and Sammy (2012), in Salt Lake City. Jason spends most of his time outside of church playing golf and guitar, hiking, fishing, and reading. The Epps family loves the Intermountain West because 1) it’s a great place to raise a family, 2) it has four beautiful seasons, and 3) it's a great place to ride his Harley!
Jason is an alumnus of Emory University (Atlanta, GA), Lee University (Cleveland, TN), Golden Gate Baptist Seminary (San Francisco, CA), Midwestern Baptist Seminary (Kansas City, MO), the University of Utah (Salt Lake City, UT), and Biola University (Los Angeles, CA), having earned degrees in pastoral studies, philosophy, theology, ministry and Christian apologetics. Jason completed his doctorate in 2007.
Licensed into Christian ministry in 1998, Jason has since served in various roles including that of youth pastor (Georgia), college pastor (Tennessee), missionary (Cairo, Egypt), lead pastor/church starter (California), and campus pastor/theology instructor (Utah). In addition to his full-time ministry here at THE RISING, Jason is a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army Reserve, where he serves as brigade chaplain to the 96th Sustainment Brigade (Fort Douglas, UT). He previously served as an officer and chaplain with the 419th Fighter Wing of the U.S. Air Force (Hill AFB, UT). He is also an adjunct professor of religion at Liberty University (Lynchburg, VA), where he teaches college classes in Biblical Studies and Theology/Apologetics.
Next to 1) Jesus and 2) Jason's wife and kids, THE RISING (along with its mission and people) is Jason's passion in life. He believes that God wants to make our church an agent of blessing to many people in the Salt Lake Valley, demonstrating the love and power of Jesus Christ. When you visit THE RISING, make sure to sign up for the “Pastor’s Open House,” an event at the Epps’ home where you will enjoy dessert, conversation, and Q&A as Jason shares his vision for the work THE RISING is called to do here in the Valley.
